Always, “Forever!”

Simply not so simple is it?

To be yourself,

to do the thing,

to make it work.

Complimenting women in line:

We could be friends,

Could be besties,

I’m sure of it.

But it’s too weird to make friends fast.

How long have they

know each other?

Always, “Forever!”

Honestly, the other day in a really long line at the grocery store, I ended up talking with the woman behind me, the woman in front of me, and the checker gal. We all had so much fun together, laughing and complimenting one another. I walked outside to put my groceries away and thought, “What would be so wrong with telling them I’d like to know them more and hang out?” Well, it would be weird, of course. Friendship in the grow-up world is hard. Meeting people when we’re all working from home is hard. Even staying connected with the ones we already know and love is reduced to Facebook posts. I miss girl time.

Challenge from dVerse Poets Pub – The Minute Poem is a 60 syllable verse form, one syllable for each second in a minute. The theme should be an event that is over and done completely, as in a minute. Since the dominant line is short the effect is likely humorous, whimsical or semi-serious. It was created by Verna Lee Hinegardner, once poet laureate of Arkansas.

The elements of the Minute Poem are:

1. narrative poetry.
2. a 12 line poem made up of 3 quatrains. (3 of 4-line stanzas)
3. syllabic, 8-4-4-4   8-4-4-4   8-4-4-4 (First line has 8 syllables of each stanza.  Remaining lines has 4 syllables in each stanza)
4. rhymed, rhyme scheme of aabb ccdd eeff.
5. description of a finished event (preferably something done is 60 seconds).
6. is best suited to light verse, likely humorous, whimsical or semi-serious.

  1. I’ve had those fleeting connections with people when out and about too and have really felt a boost in spirit. Seems true, that many adults find it difficult to forge lasting friendships. I miss that too. Very nicely done!

  2. I know so well how hard it is to make new friends… it seems the only reason we ever make new friends is through, work, family or studies… I long to go back to university, and I don’t think it is any easier for men.

    1. Thanks for commiserating with me on this. It’s not easy. It could be, maybe, if no one had any fear of rejection. That’s a bit Lalaland though.

  3. I often talk to strangers in the supermarket too. 🙂 And I read an article just recently on why it’s hard to make friends as an adult. Apparently it’s about trust – adults just find it harder to trust new people than kids do.

    1. Yes. And we all have tiny bits of baggage from bygone days of being rejected or made fun of and hoping for better connections in adulthood can make us feel like we’re just wishful thinking.

  4. a neat minute, I would hope to encounter those same women in the supermarket again … then you can risk asking one for coffee 🙂 You make a good point!

  5. This brings up a vivid picture, and shares an experience with great immediacy. Our world has become of necessity so small–yet moments like these remind us we are all connected.
